- PowWow Version 4.0 beta 1 - Released February 1, 2000
- =====================================================
- Welcome to PowWow 4.0, the next step in instant communication!
-
- PowWow Version 4.0 provides a redesigned user interface as well
- as interoperability with other instant messaging products. Key
- updates include:
-
- o PowWow is now interoperable with both Microsoft Messenger Service
- (MSNMS) and AOL Instant Messager (AIM). You must have valid MSNMS
- or AIM accounts to use this new functionality. Enter your account
- information by selecting OPTIONS|PREFERENCES from the main window,
- and clicking on the AIM and MSNMS tabs.
-
- o Web Mini Browser tabs have been added to the bottom of the main window.
- Clicking on a tab switches to a different mini-browser window pane
- inside PowWow for quick access to news and other information.
-
- o A search field at the bottom of the main window lets search through
- any of fifteen (15) different web search engines.
-
- o PowWow 4.0 supports the joining and hosting of Communities. Additonally,
- you can now host your own, private 100-person Community for free.
-
- o The Buddy List is now divided into three categories: Friends, Family,
- and Work. Categories can be expanded and collapsed.
-
- o You can now communicate via real-time voice chat and send files
- directly from the Buddy List right click menu - no need to establish a
- PowWow session first.
-
- o Instant messages are now displayed in a threaded form, including
- your own comments. Your instant message threads can be copied or
- saved for future reference. You can also include clickable URLs
- within your instant messages.
-
- o Personal pictures are no longer limited to 10KB in size and JPG
- format, but can be any size and in .BMP, .GIF, or .BMP format.
- Note that pictures are converted to JPG format before they are
- transfered, and resize to 10KB if you are chatting with a PowWow
- Version 3.X user.
-
- o PowWow's sounds can now be configured from the Sounds applet in
- your Control Panel. Additional sound schemes are available from
- <http://www.clipsounds.com/>.
-
- o PowWow's text-to-speech abbreviations are now controlled through
- the ABBREVS.TXT file in the PowWow application directory.
-
- o Preliminary support has been added for SAPI 4.0-compliant
- text-to-speech synthesizers for improved text-to-speech sound.
-
- o The method in which passwords are stored has been changed to
- increase security.
-
- o The maximum password length has been increased from seven (7) to
- sixty-four (64) characters.
-
- o The Toolbar now includes drop-down menus.
-
- o Ad banners are now displayed in PowWow. For information about
- advertising, visit <http://www.247media.com/ad_sales/jump_gen.htm>.

- OTHER ISSUES
- ============
-
-
- NOTE TO USERS OF PREVIOUS VERSIONS:
-
- Beginning with PowWow Version 4.0, the length of passwords and the
- method used to encrypt passwords has changed to increase security.
-
- If you run an older version of PowWow after running PowWow 4.0, the
- 'Save Password' option will be disabled, and you will be prompted
- to re-enter your password.
-
- If you are unsure of what your password is, or need to change your
- password, visit <http://support.tribal.com/powwow/password/>.
-
- To enable the 'Save Password' option, go to the Preferences menu
- in your old version of PowWow.
-
-
- NOTE TO WINDOWS 95 and NT 4.0 (PRE-SERVICE PACK 4 USERS):
-
- PowWow uses the 32-bit Common Controls library to create many of the
- dialog boxes and windows you see. If you have an older version of the
- COMCTL32.DLL file PowWow may not be able to draw these
- correctly and will cause a General Protection Fault as a result.
-
- In order to use PowWow, you must have Version 4.70 or later of the
- COMCTL32.DLL file. Version 4.70 of the COMCTL32.DLL file is
- dated August 8, 1996, 8:30PM with a size of 310,544 bytes.
-
- For Windows 95 users, if you have an older version, you need to install
- the latest version of the COMCTL32.DLL file. It is available for download
- from Microsoft's FTP site at:
-
- ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/Softlib/MSLFILES/COM32UPD.EXE
-
- After you have downloaded the file, run it by double-clicking on the
- COMCTL32.EXE file. If you are unsure of where the file is on your
- computer, use the Find Files applet from the Start Menu to locate it.
-
-
- For Windows NT user, you can download the latest Service Pack from
- Microsoft's FTP site at:
-
- ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/bussys/winnt/winnt-public/fixes/
-
- Go to the appropriate subdirectory for your country, for example,
- "usa" for the United States, and follow the path to the Service Pack
- subdirectory. You may wish to install any Hot Fixes available, as
- well.
-
- Be sure to reboot your computer after installing any fixes for the
- changes to take effect.
-
- If you have any difficulties installing PowWow you can send email to
- technical support at powwow-support@tribal.com for further assistance.
